Sometimes I like to watch infomercials and home shopping channels, for entertainment. There's something soothing about them to me. Usually I watch cooking-related infomercials, but I stumbled upon an Invicta Watch "Discovery Tour" on EVINE (formerly ShopHQ, formerly ShopNBC).

A lot of Invicta watches are particularly gaudy and huge, with some decent exceptions. But I went on the EVINE website and looked at their watches, and they have a bunch of cheap-ass watches. This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It's nothing fancy, and Stuhrling watches are most commonly found in the soon-to-be extinct SkyMall catalog, but I've wanted a day/date pilot watch with a brown leather strap and gray face for a while now. For 50 bones, it's pretty hard to resist.

So what say ye, watchlopniks? Should I buy it?

UPDATE: These are the watches I have already.

No. Get something with a Seagull 6497 movement for $100.

Is it the same company as Invicta? I've had two Invictas (both mechanicals) over the years both of which failed when the crystals unsealed allowing entrapped moisture. Not worth watchsmithing in their price range.

Invictas are a waste of money. IMO.

Yeah, I didn't buy them, but since I like to tinker with automatics and mechanicals I got known as a watch guy so I get all sorts of junk watches as gifts.

I don't think they're the same company, just this particular home shopping channel (and other infomercial-y and SkyMall type outlets) tend to carry both brands.

That is a really cool looking watch. My criticism is that its a quartz watch and you can buy a movement for like a couple bucks. so $50 seems a good deal until the parts it cost to build it are considered. But that is kinda the going price so maybe I am being wierd.

The design is really cool. I love the gray and the texures and shapes on the face its a really cool design. not too fussy.

The leather of the band looks sorta cheap maybe its just the photo makes the band look shiny.

That Sturhling is a less expensive copy of the AVI-8 Harrier watch on the same site. Also, most pilot watches you get are going to be enormous. I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend, but I would suggest a Hamilton Khaki King Pilot.

If you like the Sturhling then get the Sturhling. I don't thnk you're regret your purchase. Plus if you get a quartz watch you won't have to pay to service it.

I luuurve that Hamilton, that's what first turned me on to the style actually. Not really in the "oh hey what's another 50 bucks spent?" impulse buy category for me.

I actually prefer quartz in cheap watches. It's simpler to deal with and you're not going to get much quality of mechanical movement in the cheap stuff. I had a low-end Seiko automatic mechanical watch and it never kept particularly good time. It wasn't expensive enough to warrant having it calibrated, so I got rid of it.

(I updated the post to include my current watches. Which are all quartz, and 2 of 3 are solar powered. The Skagen isn't...and actually needs a new battery.)
